General Areas of Research
Basic Research
The basic research of the Department of Oncology is aimed at characterizing the molecular determinants and signal transduction pathways specific to oncological diseases, to understand the relationships between tumor cells and the microenvironment, metastasis patterns, mechanisms of drug resistance, and nano-structured materials as being responsible for tumor initiation or as an innovative therapeutic tool.
Translational Research
Translational research in the Department of Oncology covers all those studies that lie at the interface between basic and clinical research, including (1) preclinical models for evaluation of innovative therapeutic and diagnostic approaches, (2) studies aimed at molecular stratification of patients to design personalized treatments, and (3) identification of circulating and tissue markers for early detection of neoplastic disease and monitoring of biological therapies.
Clinical Research
The Department of Oncology conducts innovative clinical trials on various tumor types, mainly in the areas of thoracic, gastrointestinal and genito-urological oncology with the aim of optimizing the diagnostic processes and therapeutic approach of the cancer patient.
